Poetry Slam – By Megan Forde
On February 27th, a poet named Stephen Murray came to speak to Transition Year students. Stephen runs a poetry website called inspireland. Inspireland are leading providers of secondary school poetry slam workshops in Ireland. Every year they deliver creative writing and poetry slam workshops to over 6000 students throughout Ireland. Stephen encourages young people to find their creative voices and to enjoy writing.
Each one of us had to write a poem either on our own or in a group and Stephen has published those onto his website. When faced with this task we were initially nervous, how are we going to write poetry? However, we were put at ease and the many different ways of writing was discussed. Poetry is a means of having your voice heard, for serious or light-hearted issues. Girls are always chatting; we knew we all had something to say! We began putting together lines, together or individually and before we knew it we had a poem!
All the girls really enjoyed the workshop and all agreed it was one of the most enjoyable things we have done this year so far.
