Home Economics

Home Economics is a subject where you will learn how to take care of yourself, others, your home and your environment. As Home Economics is a very practical subject, you will carry out a lot of activities in school and at home.

At St. Mary’s, we believe that Home Economics is an essential part of a well-rounded education, offering students valuable life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Home Economics aims to develop students’ knowledge, attitudes, understanding, skills and values to achieve optimal, healthy and sustainable living for every person as an individual, and as a member of families and society. Students develop practical food and health literacy skills so that they are enabled to adopt a healthy lifestyle and make informed decisions that positively impact their health and well-being as individuals as well as within their families and society. Home economics nurtures students’ resourcefulness, innovation, adaptability, and competency as consumers. It develops students’ creative design and textile skills. Home economics develops students who are environmentally conscious and dedicated to a sustainable and responsible way of life.

Home Economics at St. Mary’s, is offered to all students. It is compulsory in the first year and is offered as an option to second year students. Students explore fundamental concepts in food science, health, and resource management, fostering creativity and confidence in the kitchen. Through hands-on activities and collaborative projects, they learn the importance of healthy eating and sustainable practices. Students undertake the Creative Textile CBA in 2nd year where they design and make an item for the home or an individual focusing on sustainability and creativity. In 3rd year students complete CBA 2, Food Literacy Skills Brief.  This exam accounts for 50% of the final grade in Home Economics. There is always great creativity and skill displayed by all students who make dishes such as Lasagna, Quiche, Pizza, Apple Crumble, Muffins, Brownies, Soups, Swiss Roll, Pasta Bakes and many more.
