First Yr Basketball

Our first Yr basketballers finished their season with a heartbreaking one point defeat to Cross and Passion, Kilcullen.St Mary’s dominated the opening quarter with excellent play leading to baskets from Kate O Connor, Aisling Kennedy, Kristen Howard and Derbhla Slattery.

However Kilcullen sprung their best player from the bench for the second quarter and almost on her own she turned the scores around. Emma o Donovan, Vanessa Sado, Aoife Duignan, Liobhan Spillane, Leah Kelly and Ellen Meagher eventually settled and managed to subdue her as well as adding a basket through Duignan.

St Marys dominated the third to leave us ahead going into the final quarter in which Vanessa Sado and Duignan in particular were excellent but in the final play Kilcullen’s star Nanci Murphy landed a free throw to see her side win on a scoreline of 28 -27We then played a challenge game so that both squads could get all their players some court time.St Mary’s won this high scoring game with great scores from Katie Mannicle. Liobhan Spillane, Leah Kelly, Paulina Tmmons and Kristen Howard doing the damage. Lara Smyth, Rachel Browne, Sheila Spain, and Karolina Timmons also showed real skill which shows the strength of our squad for next year.

8/3/13

St Mary's had two great wins in the Midland's League on Friday 8th.

The first years led the way with a big win. Early scores from Aoife Duignan and three baskets from the excellent Liobhan Spillane settled the nerves. In the second quarter Emma O Donovan was dominant under the boards and finished with two lovely two pointers. Aisling Kennedy chipped in with another to leave St Marys upp by 10 at half time.

In the second half St Marys showed some good defenc3e and extended their lead with baskets from Susan O Hara, Ellen Maher, Karolina Timmons and and two more from Spillane.

All in all it was a super team effort and earned the girls their second win of the season. They noe hed into the final league against Cross and Passion Kilcullen in high spirits.

In the second quarter Laura Cuneen showed plenty of speed to finish a fast break before Faith Quigley fired in two in succession to leave us winning by 7 at the break. Good play from Mary Grace and Laurna Brislane in the third quarter denied Confey any chance of a come back with baskets from Brislane and a free throw from Banaghan rewards for their hard and smart play.

In the final quarter baskets from Quigley and Elizabeth Buckely completed the scoring and St Mary's deservedly won 17- 7.

Thanks to Patsy Farrell for reffing and Shannon Moran and Lauren Ryan for the table.

5/3/13

It has been a busy few weeks on the basketball front with the First year and Second Years in action.
Following a good win over Ursuline Thurles the first years played a friendly against Kilcock Second years and did wel despites losing by ten at the end

The second years played a league game the same day against kilcock and were much improved. Despite good performances from Diana Rotura, Mary Grace and Alicia Hallinan they suffered their second loss of the campaign.

On March 5th we hosted St Marys Naas and the former 'A' school were just too strong for our girls. First years Derbhla Slattery, Kristen Howard, Ellen Maher, Susan O Hara, Aisling Kennedy and Vanessa Sado played super and will learn a lot from playing against such an accomplished side. The 2nd Years also suffered a defeat but two three point efforts from Alexa Banaghan gave the home side something to cheer about.

First Year Team

Our 1st Yr Team got their year off to a flying start with a narrow win in the Midlands League away to Ursuline Thurles. They dominated the game but in the end were lucky to hold on and baskets from Vanessa Sado, Emma O Donovan, Liobhan Spillane and Aisling Kennady were needed to ensure victory. It was a great team effort overall and the training at lunchtimes every Monday and Tuesday really paid off.

The second years were outclassed on the same day against a strong Ursuline team but even still Alicia Hallinan, Diana Rotoru, Faith Quigley, Lorna Brislane and Mary Grace showd great heart and plenty of reasons to be optimictic for the future games.

Next up Scoil Dara Kilcock visit the school in the second round of the league. Best of luck to both teams!
